Frequently Asked Questions

About CBD

What is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which belongs to a class of naturally-occurring plant compounds called cannabinoids. CBD is known to have several therapeutic benefits, including mood-stabilizing properties and pain relief, for animal species with cannabinoid receptors in their bodies, such as humans, dogs, cats, and horses.

Where does CBD come from?

CBD and other cannabinoids are extracted from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa.

What is hemp?

Hemp is a plant in the botanical class of Cannabis sativa cultivars grown specifically for industrial and consumable use. Hemp, like bamboo, is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth and is both highly renewable and sustainable. Hemp offers a wide range of uses in textiles, construction, energy, nutrition, and medicine.

Is cannabis the same thing as marijuana?

Yes and no. Cannabis refers to the entire plant, while "marijuana" refers specifically to the flowering parts of select cultivars that contain high levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound that causes a "high." Marijuana is classified as a controlled substance by the US federal government.

Cannabis plants cultivated to contain less than 0.3% THC by dry weight are classified as industrial hemp. Hemp is legal in all 50 states per the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018.

Can CBD get you "high"?

No. CBD itself is not intoxicating. Certain types of CBD products do still contain trace amounts of THC. However, to achieve a recreational high from one of these, most people would need to consume an extremely large amount that far exceeds recommended serving sizes.

What are the types of CBD extracts available?

There are three types of CBD extracts, categorized by content: full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate.

What is full-spectrum CBD?

Sometimes referred to as "whole flower," fulls-spectrum CBD retains all components of the cannabis plant, including an amount of THC up to 0.3%. It also contains other cannabinoids (such as CBG and CBN), terpenes (which contribute to a distinct aroma and taste), and flavonoids (which add antioxidant properties). This range of compounds together creates what is known as the entourage effect (more on that below).

What is broad-spectrum CBD?

Broad-spectrum CBD retains most of the cannabinoids, only trace amounts of the terpenes and flavonoids, and a trace or non-detectable level of THC. This type of CBD may be best for people who want the benefits of the entourage effect but without the THC and without the distinct flavor of hemp.

What is CBD isolate?

CBD isolate contains only CBD and almost no additional compounds from the cannabis plant. This type of CBD is the purest form available. However, it may not be as effective for therapeutic uses due to the lack of entourage effect.

What is the entourage effect?

A study published in 2020 was the first to describe a synergy between multiple compounds found in the cannabis plant that can significantly improve CBD's therapeutic effects on mood stabilization. Researches referred to this as the "entourage effect."

Additional research has found that the presence of THC, other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids performs better than just CBD alone for pain relief and seizures.

Does the type of CBD extract matter?

Yes. For humans, the best type of CBD extract may vary depending on the desired outcome and whether or not they wish to use a product containing THC.

For dogs and cats, however, even a small amount of THC can be toxic. While the 0.3% limit is generally considered to be safe, we take pet health and safety very seriously.

That is why we use only the highest quality broad-spectrum distillate in all of our products. This means that the raw hemp extract has been distilled and further refined to remove 100% of the THC.

How do you ensure there is no THC in CBD?

The only way to be certain is to look for a CBD product whose composition has been tested by an independent, third-party laboratory that complies with ISO/IEC-17025. These facilities issue what are called certificates of analysis, or COAs, which a reputable manufacturer should make available to you. Check the COA to see that the THC content says "0.0%" or "ND"

All of our CBD is tested prior to being added to any of our products. Additionally, our pet products are tested by a second independent lab prior to being released for sale. You can find the certificates of analysis on our test results page.
