About CBD
What is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, which belongs to a class of naturally-occurring plant compounds called cannabinoids. CBD is known to have several therapeutic benefits, including mood-stabilizing properties and pain relief, for animal species with cannabinoid receptors in their bodies, such as humans, dogs, cats, and horses.
Where does CBD come from?
CBD and other cannabinoids are extracted from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa.
What is hemp?
Hemp is a plant in the botanical class of Cannabis sativa cultivars grown specifically for industrial and consumable use. Hemp, like bamboo, is one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth and is both highly renewable and sustainable. Hemp offers a wide range of uses in textiles, construction, energy, nutrition, and medicine.
Is cannabis the same thing as marijuana?
Yes and no. Cannabis refers to the entire plant, while "marijuana" refers specifically to the flowering parts of select cultivars that contain high levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound that causes a "high." Marijuana is classified as a controlled substance by the US federal government.
Cannabis plants cultivated to contain less than 0.3% THC by dry weight are classified as industrial hemp. Hemp is legal in all 50 states per the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018.
Can CBD get you "high"?
No. CBD itself is not intoxicating, although certain types of CBD products do contain a trace amount of THC. However, to achieve a recreational high from one of these, most people would need to consume an extremely large quantity that far exceeds recommended serving sizes. Our CBD products are lab-tested to ensure they contain no THC.
What are the types of CBD extracts available?
There are three types of CBD extracts, categorized by content: full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate.
What is full-spectrum CBD?
Sometimes referred to as "whole flower," fulls-spectrum CBD retains all components of the cannabis plant, including an amount of THC up to 0.3%. It also contains other cannabinoids (such as CBG and CBN), terpenes (which contribute to a distinct aroma and taste), and flavonoids (which add antioxidant properties). This range of compounds together creates what is known as the entourage effect (more on that below).
What is broad-spectrum CBD?
Broad-spectrum CBD retains most of the cannabinoids, only trace amounts of the terpenes and flavonoids, and a trace or non-detectable level of THC. This type of CBD may be best for people who want the benefits of the entourage effect but without the THC and without the distinct flavor of hemp. This is the only type of CBD that we use in our products, and we have it lab-tested to ensure there is 0.0% THC.
What is CBD isolate?
CBD isolate contains only CBD and almost no additional compounds from the cannabis plant. This type of CBD is the purest form available. However, it may not be as effective for therapeutic uses due to the lack of entourage effect.
What is the entourage effect?
A study published in 2020 was the first to describe a synergy between multiple compounds found in the cannabis plant that can significantly improve CBD's therapeutic effects on mood stabilization. Researches referred to this as the "entourage effect."
Additional research has found that the presence of THC, other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids performs better than just CBD alone for pain relief and seizures.
Does the type of CBD extract matter?
Yes. For humans, the best type of CBD extract may vary depending on the desired outcome and whether or not they wish to use a product containing THC.
For dogs and cats, however, even a small amount of THC can be toxic. While the 0.3% limit is generally considered to be safe, we take pet health and safety very seriously.
That is why we use only the highest quality broad-spectrum distillate in all of our products. This means that the raw hemp extract has been distilled and further refined to remove 100% of the THC.
How do you ensure there is no THC in CBD?
The only way to be certain is to look for a CBD product whose composition has been tested by an independent, third-party laboratory that complies with ISO/IEC-17025. These facilities issue what are called certificates of analysis, or COAs, which a reputable manufacturer should make available to you. Check the COA to see that the THC content says "0.0%" or "ND"
All of our CBD is tested prior to being added to any of our products. Additionally, our pet products are tested by a second independent lab prior to being released for sale. You can find the certificates of analysis on our test results page.
CBD Dosing for People
How much CBD should a person take?
There's no one-size-fits-all answer for CBD dosage, as it depends on individual factors like body weight/composition, genetic predisposition, and the condition being treated.
A common starting point for the average adult is 1 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight per day, then gradually increase it in small increments every few days until you find what works best. Some adults take as much as 5 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight per day, while others need much less to achieve a therapeutic benefit.
Consulting with a healthcare professional is recommended to determine the most appropriate dosage for your specific needs.
How long does it take for CBD to start working?
Most humans start responding to CBD within 30-60 minutes. This depends on different factors, including your individual metabolism, whether you are taking CBD on a full or empty stomach, and they type of CBD product being taken. For instance, some people report feeling relief within 5 minutes of topically applying one of our salves.
How long does CBD last?
Each dose lasts from 4-8 hours, depending on your size, activity level, metabolism, and the severity of symptoms.
How often can I take CBD?
Generally speaking, you can take CBD as often as needed for therapeutic relief. Many people with joint stiffness, mobility issues, or other chronic conditions will take CBD twice daily, in the morning and at night.
When should I take CBD?
The timing, dosage, and frequency of CBD administration depends on your individual needs. If you are using CBD for general wellness, a once-daily dose should suffice. However, for specific issues like anxiety or joint pain, splitting your daily dose into multiple servings may provide more consistent relief.
CBD Dosing for Pets
How much CBD should I give my pets?
Just as with humans, there is no one-size-fits-all answer for your pets. The average target dose of CBD for a dog is 0.1-0.2 mg per pound of body weight, while the average target dose for a cat is 0.2-0.3 mg per pound of body weight.
Each individual animal can be more sensitive or less sensitive to its effects, so start small and gradually increase the dosage in small increments every few days until you achieve the desired effect.
Consulting with a veterinary professional is recommended to determine the most appropriate dosage for your pet's specific needs.
How long does it take for CBD to start working?
Much like humans, both dogs and cats start responding to CBD within 30-60 minutes. This depends on different factors, including their individual metabolism, whether they are taking CBD on a full or empty stomach, and they type of CBD product being administered.
How long does CBD last?
Each dose lasts from 4-8 hours, depending on your pet's size, activity level, metabolism, and the severity of their symptoms. Older, larger animals tend to take longer than smaller, younger ones to digest food, which translates to longer-lasting effect.
When it comes to your pets, they will tell you if it's time for more as they start having symptoms again.
How often can I give CBD to my pets?
Generally speaking, you can give your animals CBD as often as needed for therapeutic relief.
When should I give CBD to my pets?
The timing, dosage, and frequency of CBD administration for your dog or cat depends on their individual needs.
For specific issues like anxiety or joint pain, a daily dose at a regular time will yield the best results, and splitting their daily dose into two equal servings may provide more consistent relief throughout the day. Each animal's metabolism is unique, so closely observing their response will inform your decisions.
You may also find it helpful to give your dog or cat an extra dose of CBD before stressful events like thunderstorms, fireworks, or trips to the groomer.
